Former Alliance prosecutor demands global arrest warrant against Putin
Former UNITED Nations war crimes prosecutors for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda need an international arrest issued against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Putin is a war criminal," Carla del Ponte told the Swiss press in an interview published Saturday.
In interviews with Swiss media at the release
of the latest book, Lawyer Suisse oversaw UN investigations in Rwanda and the
former Yugoslavia claiming that there were clear crimes. The war in Ukraine.
He was particularly shocked by the use of conventional
holes in Russia's war against Ukraine, reminiscent of the worst battles in the
former Yugoslavia.
"I hoped I would never see the pit,"
Blick says. "These deceased people have relatives who don't even know what
happened to them. This is unacceptable.
Other war crimes she has identified in Ukraine
include attacks on civilians, the destruction of civilian buildings, and even
the destruction of entire villages. She
said the investigation in Ukraine would be easier than in Yugoslavia because it
was the country that requested an international investigation. The ICC's
current chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, visited Ukraine last month.
If the ICC finds evidence of war crimes, she
says, "you have to put a chain of command on the people who made the decision."
She may have even said she would let Putin do the math.
"We must not give up, let's continue to
investigate. When the investigation into Slobodan Milosevic began, he was still
President of Serbia. Who would have thought that one day they would be judged?
Nobody," she told Blick.
Del Ponte added that investigations should be
conducted into possible war crimes committed by both sides, also pointing to
reports of alleged torture of several Russian prisoners of war by Ukrainian
forces.
This story corrects Del Ponte's title of Chief
Prosecutor of the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal.
